A Brief History of the MR2 Mark 2

In 1990 Toyota released the the new MR2 with a completely new design. It was longer and wider than its predecessor and adopted a much curvier style. The interior cabin was also larger then the Mk I. This re-design really took off and proved to be a very popular car with the public around the world.

Production of the Mk II ran from 1990-1999 and included the following engine types:

• Normally aspirated 2 litre 3SGE & 3SFE engines (SW20)
• Normally aspirated 2.2 litre 5SFE engine (USA)
• Turbo-charged 2 litre 3SGTE engine

Normally aspirated cars were available with manual or automatic transmissions, Turbo-charged cars only had manual transmission. In 1992 the suspension was upgraded and 15" wheels were introduced in cure handling problems. 1993 saw new a suspension, up rated brakes, changes to the rear tail lights and spoiler. 1998 saw the final update with a 3 position adjustable larger rear wing.
